Beijing says U.S. arbitrary measures harm the Cuban people.

On Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said China opposes the U.S. blockade and other arbitrary restrictions affecting the Cuban people.

“China has consistently opposed illegal unilateral sanctions that lack any basis in international law and firmly supports Cuba in safeguarding its national sovereignty and security,” he said.

The diplomat also specified that China urged the United States to immediately end its blockade on Cuba and all forms of coercion and pressure, while ceasing violations of the Cuban people’s right to survival and development.

Lin’s statements came in response to remarks by Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, who said the Caribbean nation faces threats of military aggression from the United States.

Previously, on Monday, the U.S. Department of the Treasury imposed a new round of sanctions against senior Cuban officials, including National Assembly President Esteban Lazo; Communist Party’s Organization Secretary Roberto Morales; and the ministers of Justice, Communications, and Energy, Rosabel Gamon Verde, Mayra Arevich, and Vicente de la O Levy.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) also imposed sanctions on military officials, including Deputy Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces Joaquin Quintas; Chief of the General Directorate of the National Revolutionary Police Eddy Sierra; Chief of the Political Directorate of the Interior Ministry Oscar Callejas; head of the Military Counterintelligence Directorate Jose Gomez; Central Army Chief Raul Villar; and Eastern Army Chief Eugenio Rabilero.

Diaz-Canel pointed out that this new round of sanctions comes amid a U.S. attempt to suffocate the Cuban people through a genocidal and total blockade simply because they refuse to submit to its interests.

“It is immoral, illegal and criminal to issue executive orders that pursue and threaten third parties seeking to sell fuel to Cuba, as well as those that extend the blockade extraterritorially to unprecedented levels, penalizing companies that wish to invest in Cuba or simply provide us with basic goods such as food, medicine, hygiene products or others,” he posted on X.
